SOFT OCCUPATION
FILM
2026
An artist film and ongoing research project exploring moss species growing across the remains of
the Atlantikwall in the Kennemerduinen. Bunkers and concrete structures remain embedded in the
dunes as scars of the Second World War, carrying the material traces of violence, militarisation and
human intervention.
Across these wounds, mosses have slowly begun to grow. Rather than erasing what came before,
they cover, inhabit and preserve its traces. The moss becomes a living archive: holding moisture,
matter and time within its layers, while carrying the history of the surfaces it grows upon. Healing
here is not a return to what existed before, but a process of living with, remembering and transforming
what remains.
The narrative unfolds through a synthesis of landscape imagery, seismic geophone recordings, field recordings, microscopic imagery of mosses and archival footage and photography, moving between
the landscape as it exists today and the histories still embedded within it.
