OPENWATER BIOSCOOP

WATERNET x EYE FILMMUSEUM
ACTIVATION  [ CONCEPT ]
2026
According to national water quality assessments, 99% of Dutch surface waters fail to meet the EU chemical standards, and almost none meet the ecological standards. Yet the alarming condition of the water around us remains largely invisible.

The Openwater Bioscoop is a public film activation for EYE Filmmuseum and Waternet that brings this issue to the surface. Over the course of one month, a floating cinema on the water of the IJ hosts free public screenings, opening each evening with a short documentary on the health of Dutch surface water, followed by feature films connected to water, pollution and the ecosystems humans depend on.

By placing the screen directly on the water, the medium becomes part of the message. Audience, cinema and water come together in one shared environment, creating space for both ecological awareness and emotional connection. By bringing people and water closer together, the activation creates an emotional connection that can become a foundation for ecological change.
