HET AFVALJOEN
DESCRIPTION
Het Afvaljoen (Waste Pavilion) is a circular pavilion built from Amsterdam’s biodegradable GFE/T waste.
The project supports De Gemeente Amsterdam’s ambition to become fully circular by 2050 by making waste streams visible, tangible and shared. In collaboration with researchers and designers from the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, each city district hosts its own Afvaljoen, built from the organic waste of local residents. What is discarded returns as biodegradable building material, forming a continuous cycle of transformation and reuse.
The Afvaljoen demonstrates that what we discard can be transformed into a fertile ground for urban growth in which waste, people, and the city all work together. These spaces act as points of connection, where social exchange, ecological processes, and urban life intersect to create dynamic, living environments.
